Nosferatu

Nosferatu: A Symphony of Shadows is a haunting, silent film inspired stage adaptation of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 horror masterpiece.  Presented in striking black and white with expressionist projections, and cinematic staging, the production reimagines Count Orlock’s eerie voyage from Transylvania to the plague-stricken port of Wisborg.  Every image evokes the flickering intensity of early cinema, immersing audiences in a world where light and shadow battle for the soul of humanity.

Featuring an original score by The Invincible Czars, performed in perfect sync with the visual storytelling, Nosferatu: A Symphony of Shadows transforms the stage into a living film.  The fusion of theatre, music, and design pays homage to the origins of horror while crafting a visceral new experience — equal parts gothic nightmare and visual symphony.
Family Friendliness Rating: PG13 – for creepiness and could be very intense for young viewers
Thursday, October 30 is Pay What You Will – all donations are appreciated!
The Matinee performance on Sunday, November 2 will feature the soundtrack played live by The Invincible Czars.  Special pricing applies for this event.

The Overtime Theater Seeks Help Celebrating Winter Holidays

The Overtime Theater in San Antonio, Texas is looking for unproduced plays celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza or the New Year—any celebration during winter holidays and the start of a new year. Your play can take place at a holiday celebration (such as a murder mystery where everyone is gathered to celebrate the holiday). The Overtime Theater will consider traditional, quirky or non-traditional holiday tales. We have a history for offbeat and unique productions, so all ideas will be considered.

We accept submissions of all lengths—short plays, one acts, and full-length plays. We have two spaces available in our theater, and we can tailor our program based on the submissions received.

Our limitation in our performance space is that we can fit 10 performers onstage maximum. No fly system or trap door is available for special character entrances.

Please format your submissions in Word or PDF format. We appreciate a list of characters with a brief description of each, and a short summary of your work within the first 3 pages of the submission. Applicants should use the title of the play as the name of the document.

The Overtime Theater accepts submissions from writers in the United States, Canada, and other English-speaking nations, but gives special attention to writers from Texas. The show does not have to be entirely in English, but we need to get the meaning if it isn’t.

The Overtime Theater is an all-volunteer organization and compensates playwrights with one equal share of donations in our tip jar at the end of the run.

Submissions should be emailed to theovertimetheater@gmail.com. We accept submissions year-round, but any submissions to be considered for the 2022 season should be received by 11:59 pm CST on September 30, 2022.

Please send any questions to theovertimetheater@gmail.com and we will respond as soon as possible.

Einstein’s Wrong About Everything

The Overtime Theater proudly presents Einstein’s Wrong About Everything, a comedic play by Joseph E. Green, July 15- August 6, 2022. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. with one Sunday matinee on July 31 at 3 p.m. at The Overtime Theater located at 5409 Bandera Road, Suite 205 on the city’s Northwest Side.

The year is 1956, and Princeton autopsist Thomas Harvey just decided to steal Einstein’s brain. That decision now has him on the lam from both the authorities and a group of neo-Nazis led by a woman who may or may not be related to the Elephant Man. Einstein’s Wrong About Everything is commentary based on true events, possibly true events, and blatantly untrue events.

“[The show] is an offbeat and slightly irreverent comedy about magical quantum physics, a lesbian Nazi, and a cavalry full of other walking contradictions,” stated Meagan Setterbo, who plays Der Elefant in the show. “If you enjoy retrospective social commentary, slapstick reveals, or convoluted methods of seduction, this show is for you!”

“Einstein’s Wrong About Everything is the comedy romp through 1956 that deals with the man and woman who stole the brain of Albert Einstein, the neo-Nazis that are chasing them, and the iconic figures of the Beatnik era that try to save the day,” said director Kareem Abu Dahab. “It’s the sorta-kinda-true story that may or may not have happened that’s worth seeing.”

Dedicated to providing original, innovative, and accessible entertainment at an affordable price, The Overtime Theater is a nonprofit organization with the mission of bringing “theater for the people” to the San Antonio community through new and thought-provoking stage productions.

“Choreographies by Women” in Celebration of Women’s History Month Finale

The Overtime Theater will present “Choreographies by Women,” a dance showcase that focuses on the process and perspective of the choreographer, at 7 p.m. Sunday, March 27, 2022. The featured choreographers will be Sarah Davis and members of Texas State University’s Grupo Folklorico Ocotochtli. “Choreographies” will be an ongoing showcase at the Overtime Theater. The purpose of the program is to give choreographers an opportunity to further develop new works. After each performance there will be an audience feedback session led by Jade Esteban Estrada, artistic director of the Overtime Theater and former choreographer to TV star Charo.

An active member of San Antonio’s theatre community, Sarah Davis is the resident choreographer for the Barshop Jewish Community Center’s Starz program. She has performed in Jade Esteban Estrada’s Spring Showcase and is also a current dancer with San Antonio Dance Fringe.

Texas State University’s Grupo Folklorico Ocotochtli was founded in 1993 after ten students, representing various Hispanic/Latinx organizations around campus, collaborated for what would be an award-winning performance at the annual Homecoming Talent Show of that year. GFO remains active on-and off-campus with performances in San Marcos, San Antonio, and New Braunfels. The group will return to San Antonio for the annual Festivales de Mexico National Folklorico & Contemporary Dance Competition in late April.

“As the Overtime Theater is a home for playwrights, it seems very natural to open our doors to San Antonio choreographers,” said Estrada. “Dance is a visual art form. We would like to share with audiences the intricate process of how choreographers bring ideas to life without the spoken word.”

Show Postponement

The Overtime Theater has postponed our production of Joseph E. Green’s comedic play, “Einstein’s Wrong About Everything,” after learning that some cast members had been exposed to the coronavirus. Opening weekend of the production was canceled late last week. The show was scheduled to run Jan. 14-Feb. 5, 2022. “Covid permitting, we plan to open ‘Einstein’s Wrong About Everything’ in July,” stated Jade Esteban Estrada, artistic director of the Overtime Theater. “An abundance of time and creative energy went into this rehearsal process, so naturally, we will be inviting the cast and crew to return to their roles if they are available at that time. One of the lessons the pandemic has taught us, especially in the theatre, is that we must always be ready to adapt to new information and circumstances, sometimes, with little notice. Fortunately, most actors are already very good at that.”

The board and staff of the Overtime Theater would like to be community leaders for safe and ethical ways to keep theater alive and vibrant during these difficult times. With the arts taking a major hit during Covid-19’s first year of closures, the venue is actively finding ways to make moving forward and staying open a priority.

The Overtime’s next offering will be their inaugural New Play Development Series: Black Voices on Thursday, Feb. 3 and “Cesar’s Palace,” a new musical slated to open Feb. 18, 2022. Ticket holders for Einstein’s Wrong About Everything should contact the Overtime Theater box office at info@theovertimetheater.org or call (210) 577-7562.Braden Ortmeyer (standing) as Jack Kerouac and Samuel Black (below) as Allen Ginsberg in a scene from Joseph E. Green’s “Einstein’s Wrong About Everything,” which has been postponed until July.

Devoted to producing new and original work, the Overtime is particularly interested in bold, innovative plays that are both challenging and entertaining.

Only submissions in a Word document or PDF will be considered. The Overtime Theater, an all-volunteer organization, compensates playwrights with one equal share of donations to our love bucket at the end of the show’s presentation.

Our New Ticket Prices

Happy New Year from The Overtime Theater!

With the start of the new season, we will have a small increase to our ticket prices effective January 1, 2022:

-General Admission: $18
-Discount Tickets (Military, Students, Educators, SATCO): $12
-The Denials Improv Comedy, Tales From The Little OT, and Shorts: $10
-Special Events such as our Overtime Cabaret and Nerd Court will range from $10-$15 depending on the event.

As an all-volunteer 501(c)3 organization in a competitive landscape, the price increase was needed to keep our doors open. You can still see live theater for less than 20 bucks a seat at the Overtime!

We are so thankful for your support over the years and hope you continue to support us in years to come as we continue to bring you live, local, and original shows in San Antonio!

Nerd Court: Roulette 2

Nerd Court Roulette Returns!

Calling all Nerds and Superhero Fans to Court at The Overtime Theater!

This time the “Character Wheel” returns so once again it’s all up to chance with EIGHT NEW pop culture characters on it. Characters like Willy Wonka, Bugs Bunny, Buffy Summers, Doc Brown, Skeletor, and more! Spin the wheel and see who the hosts will be defending and debating.

What is Nerd Court?
Who is better?? Batman Vs. Superman. Star Wars vs Star Trek. Picard Vs Kirk. Gandalf Vs Dumbledore?
We will finally answer these questions in the court of highest opinion: THE NERD COURT. Two lawyers of our nerdiest caliber will argue the benefits of their nerd topic, while tearing down their opponents. When the dust settles our OverJudge will deliver their verdict and Nerd Justice will be delivered! These are their stories! – Chun-Chun!
