Monday, Or The Other Rape Play

Monday follows Wiley, a comedian navigating the tumultuous aftermath of sexual assault. Her journey, laced with dark humor and moments of profound vulnerability, reflects the often messy and nonlinear path toward reclaiming one’s narrative. Through shifting scenes between her apartment, comedy club, and therapy sessions, the play presents an unflinching look at the intersections of humor and pain, survival and silence, and ultimately, the courage it takes to seek justice and connection.

Trigger Warning: This play includes explicit language and the themes of rape and violence against women.

Fearless Bloodsuckers of Hollywood

The Overtime Theater proudly presents Fearless Bloodsuckers of Hollywood, a dark comedy by Felix Racelis with performances running from September 30 to October 22, 2022. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. with one Sunday matinee on October 16 at 3 p.m. at The Overtime Theater located at 5409 Bandera Road, Suite 205 on the city’s Northwest Side.

Zac Spitz has become a true Hollywood success story. He is popular and well loved after his starring role in the hit TV show Fearless Bloodsuckers. But it’s not enough for Zac. After a chance encounter on a Hollywood street Zac decides he wants to give back to the homeless community of Hollywood. And what better way to do that than to film a reality TV show in a homeless shelter? What could possibly go wrong?

Fearless Bloodsuckers of Hollywood – despite its title – features bloodsuckers of only the human kind. This production also marks the return to the Overtime stage of director Dave Stone-Robb who last worked with the Overtime three locations and 12 years ago. When Dave was asked how it feels being back at The Overtime, he said “It feels like a family reunion in many ways. They have given me the opportunity to work on a beautiful and hilarious play about second chances and redemption.” The Overtime is also very excited by his return!

With this play we are showing the struggles of the unhoused in Hollywood to a San Antonio audience. When asked why he wrote this play, author Felix Racelis replied “Several years ago I caught a TV news segment about homelessness in L.A. It featured an interview with an adjunct professor who lost a couple of teaching gigs and was living in his car. I’d already been thinking about writing a play about the unhoused, and this story gave me the impetus to finally pursue it. I wanted to write a play about second chances for both main characters, Zac and Bertrand.” Director Dave Stone-Robb is tasked with bringing the author’s vision to life on The Overtime’s stage. According to Dave, “Fearless Bloodsuckers of Hollywood will surprise you around every turn with its relatable charming characters coming to terms with the monsters of the past while navigating their uncharted future.”

Dedicated to providing original, innovative, and accessible entertainment at an affordable price, The Overtime Theater is a nonprofit organization with the mission of bringing “theater for the people” to the San Antonio community through new and thought-provoking stage productions.

The Overtime Theater Seeks Help Celebrating Winter Holidays

The Overtime Theater in San Antonio, Texas is looking for unproduced plays celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza or the New Year—any celebration during winter holidays and the start of a new year. Your play can take place at a holiday celebration (such as a murder mystery where everyone is gathered to celebrate the holiday). The Overtime Theater will consider traditional, quirky or non-traditional holiday tales. We have a history for offbeat and unique productions, so all ideas will be considered.

We accept submissions of all lengths—short plays, one acts, and full-length plays. We have two spaces available in our theater, and we can tailor our program based on the submissions received.

Our limitation in our performance space is that we can fit 10 performers onstage maximum. No fly system or trap door is available for special character entrances.

Please format your submissions in Word or PDF format. We appreciate a list of characters with a brief description of each, and a short summary of your work within the first 3 pages of the submission. Applicants should use the title of the play as the name of the document.

The Overtime Theater accepts submissions from writers in the United States, Canada, and other English-speaking nations, but gives special attention to writers from Texas. The show does not have to be entirely in English, but we need to get the meaning if it isn’t.

The Overtime Theater is an all-volunteer organization and compensates playwrights with one equal share of donations in our tip jar at the end of the run.

Submissions should be emailed to theovertimetheater@gmail.com. We accept submissions year-round, but any submissions to be considered for the 2022 season should be received by 11:59 pm CST on September 30, 2022.

Please send any questions to theovertimetheater@gmail.com and we will respond as soon as possible.

Pirates vs Ninjas: THE MUSICAL

The Overtime Theater proudly presents Pirates vs Ninjas: The Musical, a hilarious musical by Scott McDowell with performances running from August 26 to September 17, 2022. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. with one Sunday matinee on September 11 at 3 p.m. at The Overtime Theater located at 5409 Bandera Road, Suite 205 on the city’s Northwest Side. In accordance with Covid-19 recommendations, there will be limited and distanced seating. Audience members are encouraged to wear face masks.

We have traveled to the land of San Texania where, for ages untold, the pirates and the ninjas have been at odds with one another.  The current generation looks like it will continue the tradition – until the Pirate Princess and Ninja Princess lock eyes across a crowded room and suddenly there is love!!  But will it be enough to overcome a lot of really, really deep dislike?  Even with all the dancing and singing?

“People have said that we’re ripping off West Side Story,” says director Rob Barron, “but that seems like a mean thing for them to say so we told them ‘Hey!  There’s no pirates in West Side Story!  So there!’  I actually always felt like Romeo and Juliet would have benefited from a couple of sea shanties, frankly.”

Einstein’s Wrong About Everything

The Overtime Theater proudly presents Einstein’s Wrong About Everything, a comedic play by Joseph E. Green, July 15- August 6, 2022. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. with one Sunday matinee on July 31 at 3 p.m. at The Overtime Theater located at 5409 Bandera Road, Suite 205 on the city’s Northwest Side.

The year is 1956, and Princeton autopsist Thomas Harvey just decided to steal Einstein’s brain. That decision now has him on the lam from both the authorities and a group of neo-Nazis led by a woman who may or may not be related to the Elephant Man. Einstein’s Wrong About Everything is commentary based on true events, possibly true events, and blatantly untrue events.

“[The show] is an offbeat and slightly irreverent comedy about magical quantum physics, a lesbian Nazi, and a cavalry full of other walking contradictions,” stated Meagan Setterbo, who plays Der Elefant in the show. “If you enjoy retrospective social commentary, slapstick reveals, or convoluted methods of seduction, this show is for you!”

“Einstein’s Wrong About Everything is the comedy romp through 1956 that deals with the man and woman who stole the brain of Albert Einstein, the neo-Nazis that are chasing them, and the iconic figures of the Beatnik era that try to save the day,” said director Kareem Abu Dahab. “It’s the sorta-kinda-true story that may or may not have happened that’s worth seeing.”

“Choreographies by Women” in Celebration of Women’s History Month Finale

The Overtime Theater will present “Choreographies by Women,” a dance showcase that focuses on the process and perspective of the choreographer, at 7 p.m. Sunday, March 27, 2022. The featured choreographers will be Sarah Davis and members of Texas State University’s Grupo Folklorico Ocotochtli. “Choreographies” will be an ongoing showcase at the Overtime Theater. The purpose of the program is to give choreographers an opportunity to further develop new works. After each performance there will be an audience feedback session led by Jade Esteban Estrada, artistic director of the Overtime Theater and former choreographer to TV star Charo.

An active member of San Antonio’s theatre community, Sarah Davis is the resident choreographer for the Barshop Jewish Community Center’s Starz program. She has performed in Jade Esteban Estrada’s Spring Showcase and is also a current dancer with San Antonio Dance Fringe.

Texas State University’s Grupo Folklorico Ocotochtli was founded in 1993 after ten students, representing various Hispanic/Latinx organizations around campus, collaborated for what would be an award-winning performance at the annual Homecoming Talent Show of that year. GFO remains active on-and off-campus with performances in San Marcos, San Antonio, and New Braunfels. The group will return to San Antonio for the annual Festivales de Mexico National Folklorico & Contemporary Dance Competition in late April.

“As the Overtime Theater is a home for playwrights, it seems very natural to open our doors to San Antonio choreographers,” said Estrada. “Dance is a visual art form. We would like to share with audiences the intricate process of how choreographers bring ideas to life without the spoken word.”

Beneath the Surface

Written by Michael Song, Beneath the Surface is an anthology of three stories, each exploring themes of isolation, confinement, and one’s belief in the world around them. In the intimate setting of the Overtime, the peril of our protagonists is palpable, their fear almost permeating and infectious. From abductions to apocalyptic conjurings, our victims endeavor to explore their grisly circumstances; each in turn is being forced to explore deep within themselves if they have hope of survival. As each story unfolds, the audience is invited along on the journey to conjecture, deduce and ultimately discover what lies…beneath the surface.

Performances: March 26-April 16, 2022

San Antonio, TX (Feb. 8, 2022) – The Overtime Theater in San Antonio, Texas is seeking new works from playwrights who self-identify as women, transwomen, or nonbinary individuals for its 2022 New Play Development Series. The chosen play will be given a staged reading at the Overtime Theater on March 10 in celebration of Women’s History Month. The script submissions window is open from Feb. 8, 2022 until 11:59 p.m. Feb. 19, 2022.

Though full-length plays are welcome, the Overtime especially seeks previously unproduced one-act plays that require one to four actors, in light of the Covid-19 pandemic. The chosen play (or plays) will be given two rehearsals and one staged reading, which includes an audience feedback session.

Devoted to producing new and original work, the Overtime is particularly interested in bold, innovative plays from across the female spectrum that are both provocative and entertaining.

For environmental reasons, the Overtime Theater is unable to accept script submissions delivered by mail or in person. Only submissions in a Word document or PDF will be considered. Applicants should use the title of the play as the name of the document, followed by the full name of the playwright. One play per applicant. The Overtime will accept submissions from writers based in the U.S. or Canada.

The Overtime Theater, an all-volunteer organization, compensates playwrights with one equal share of donations to our tip jar at the end of the play’s one-night presentation.

Submissions should be sent to submissions@theovertimetheater.org. Attn: Jade Esteban Estrada, artistic director. Deadline is midnight Mar. 12, 2022.
