San Antonio, TX (Jan. 31, 2022) – The Overtime Theater has chosen “Coco Queens” by LaDarrion Williams as an official selection of the 2022 New Play Development Series. Former District 2 Councilwoman Jada Andrews-Sullivan is slated to perform in the staged reading at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10 (new date). The Overtime Theater is located at 5409 Bandera Road, Suite 205 on the city’s Northwest Side. In adherence to our Covid-19 safety protocol, there will be limited and distanced seating and audience members must wear face masks. General admission tickets are $9. Tickets may be purchased at the door or online at theovertimetheater.org

The series’ inaugural program titled “Black Voices” will present new works from Black playwrights in celebration of Black History Month. In January, the Overtime opened submissions and ultimately received over 60 applicants.

Williams’ full-length play will receive two rehearsals, a public staged reading and an audience feedback session.

Set in a small town called Helena, Alabama, Coco Queens is a riveting play that forms an unbroken bond between four women as they navigate their way through deep-seated, sometimes painful challenges of love, forgiveness, and Black womanhood in the 1970s.

The four-member cast will include Danielle King, Shania Thomas, former D2 Councilwoman Jada Andrews-Sullivan, and Denise Swain. Aisha Love will direct.

“For a playwright, a staged reading is an important preparatory step in the creative process,” said Jade Esteban Estrada, artistic director of the Overtime Theater. “Over the course of the year, I invite all San Antonio actors and directors to take part in what I hope will be an artistically rewarding program at our theater.”

Williams is a Los Angeles-based playwright, filmmaker, and screenwriter. His play Coco Queens was part of the 2019 Sundance Institute’s Playwriting Intensive. The following year, the play was a semi-finalist at the Eugene O’Neill National Playwrights Conference. Williams is currently a resident playwright and co-creator of The Black Creators Collective.

“People turn their noses up at the South but Black Culture, Black History, and the Black Future is the South,” wrote Williams in an acceptance statement. “Every Black American soul is just a few generations from a Southern migration. This play is for my mama, a Black woman, who lives and exists, and my sister, a Black woman who believes love should be without struggle. This play is about heritage and the beauty and complexities of Black womanhood who had to keep on keepin’ on. I’m so excited to share this with the San Antonio audiences for Black History Month.”

Devoted to producing new and original work, the Overtime is particularly interested in bold, innovative plays that are both challenging and entertaining. The New Play Development Series is an on-going initiative.

“The purpose of this program is to bring more fully developed plays to our stages,” said Estrada. “When a great, meaningful play has an opening night, it is likely that the play had a table reading, a staged reading, and one or more workshop development performances. In my own experience as a playwright, I get a better picture of what my play is about after I present it in front of a live audience.”

Magick: An Evening with Aleister Crowley

Magick: An Evening with Aleister Crowley

A return engagement

“Magick” is a 60-minute musical comedy that circles the life and work of Aleister Crowley, considered by many to be one of the most important occult figures of the 20th century. Book, music and lyrics by Estrada, a man who’s spent most of his performance career portraying some of the most famous people in the history of Western civilization through his widely-traveled solo musicals.

“Magick” is the 21st solo show performed by Estrada, who began his solo theatre career at Jump-Start Performance Company in 1997 with is self-penned production of “It’s Too Late…It’s Already in Me.” Estrada has spent his career bringing stories of such historical figures to life on stage, such as Oscar Wilde, Gertrude Stein and Tennessee Williams. He is the sole creator of 17 original solo shows including “A Lullaby for Ryan: The History of HIV/AIDS in America” and “ICONS: The Lesbian & Gay History of the World, Vol. 1” which he performed at The Overtime earlier this month in observance of National LGBTQ Pride Month. Other solo performances in San Antonio have included “The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs” at the Woodlawn Theatre in 2013 and “The Kindness of Strangers” at Woodlawn Pointe in January of this year. “Jade Esteban Estrada knows how to fill the stage all by himself,” writes The San Antonio Current.

Enter the capricious mind of Aleister Crowley as he takes his guests on a dark, irreverent journey of his notorious life as the leader of 20th century occultism and ceremonial magick. Dubbed by the press as “The Wickedest Man in the World,” Crowley, who referred to himself as “The Great Beast 666,” founded his own religious order and his works have been credited with ushering in the New Age movement. An icon of popular culture, he was included as one of the figures on the cover art of The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” and was the subject of Ozzy Osbourne’s song entitled “Mr. Crowley.” Traveling the world in search of spiritual enlightenment, he spent his days writing numerous books and designed his own Tarot Cards that are still in use today. In his rage against Christianity, Crowley’s essential philosophy, “Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law. Love is the law, love under will,” is a belief that frames his prophesy that has seemingly come to pass, though many believe it has yet to be completely fulfilled.

“Estrada knows how to draw an audience in and hold them in the palm of his hand,” writes Deborah Martin of The San Antonio Express-News. Estrada recently performed his solo shows in Australia and South Africa.

In the past year, Estrada has written, directed and starred in three burlesque plays at The Overtime Theater: “Sinderella and the Glass Zipper,” “How Burlesque Saved Christmas” and “Madame X: A Burlesque Fantasy.”
