The Perfect Gift

Poster Design: Georgie Lee | Photo by: Dave Stone-Robb

Married couple Neil and Sally Dugan’s Christmas Eve at home with Sally’s enfeebled mother Rosemary is already wild enough with the outdoor display of their eccentric neighbor Delores attracting the entire neighborhood. But when a stranger arrives at their front door, the Dugan’s are forced to re-examine their seemingly quiet, uneventful lives. A story of the lies we tell ourselves and the ways we cope when our circumstances are seemingly insurmountable.

Fearless Bloodsuckers of Hollywood

The Overtime Theater proudly presents Fearless Bloodsuckers of Hollywood, a dark comedy by Felix Racelis with performances running from September 30 to October 22, 2022. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. with one Sunday matinee on October 16 at 3 p.m. at The Overtime Theater located at 5409 Bandera Road, Suite 205 on the city’s Northwest Side.

Zac Spitz has become a true Hollywood success story. He is popular and well loved after his starring role in the hit TV show Fearless Bloodsuckers. But it’s not enough for Zac. After a chance encounter on a Hollywood street Zac decides he wants to give back to the homeless community of Hollywood. And what better way to do that than to film a reality TV show in a homeless shelter? What could possibly go wrong?

Fearless Bloodsuckers of Hollywood – despite its title – features bloodsuckers of only the human kind. This production also marks the return to the Overtime stage of director Dave Stone-Robb who last worked with the Overtime three locations and 12 years ago. When Dave was asked how it feels being back at The Overtime, he said “It feels like a family reunion in many ways. They have given me the opportunity to work on a beautiful and hilarious play about second chances and redemption.” The Overtime is also very excited by his return!

With this play we are showing the struggles of the unhoused in Hollywood to a San Antonio audience. When asked why he wrote this play, author Felix Racelis replied “Several years ago I caught a TV news segment about homelessness in L.A. It featured an interview with an adjunct professor who lost a couple of teaching gigs and was living in his car. I’d already been thinking about writing a play about the unhoused, and this story gave me the impetus to finally pursue it. I wanted to write a play about second chances for both main characters, Zac and Bertrand.” Director Dave Stone-Robb is tasked with bringing the author’s vision to life on The Overtime’s stage. According to Dave, “Fearless Bloodsuckers of Hollywood will surprise you around every turn with its relatable charming characters coming to terms with the monsters of the past while navigating their uncharted future.”

Dedicated to providing original, innovative, and accessible entertainment at an affordable price, The Overtime Theater is a nonprofit organization with the mission of bringing “theater for the people” to the San Antonio community through new and thought-provoking stage productions.

The Overtime Theater Seeks Help Celebrating Winter Holidays

The Overtime Theater in San Antonio, Texas is looking for unproduced plays celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza or the New Year—any celebration during winter holidays and the start of a new year. Your play can take place at a holiday celebration (such as a murder mystery where everyone is gathered to celebrate the holiday). The Overtime Theater will consider traditional, quirky or non-traditional holiday tales. We have a history for offbeat and unique productions, so all ideas will be considered.

We accept submissions of all lengths—short plays, one acts, and full-length plays. We have two spaces available in our theater, and we can tailor our program based on the submissions received.

Our limitation in our performance space is that we can fit 10 performers onstage maximum. No fly system or trap door is available for special character entrances.

Please format your submissions in Word or PDF format. We appreciate a list of characters with a brief description of each, and a short summary of your work within the first 3 pages of the submission. Applicants should use the title of the play as the name of the document.

The Overtime Theater accepts submissions from writers in the United States, Canada, and other English-speaking nations, but gives special attention to writers from Texas. The show does not have to be entirely in English, but we need to get the meaning if it isn’t.

The Overtime Theater is an all-volunteer organization and compensates playwrights with one equal share of donations in our tip jar at the end of the run.

Submissions should be emailed to theovertimetheater@gmail.com. We accept submissions year-round, but any submissions to be considered for the 2022 season should be received by 11:59 pm CST on September 30, 2022.

Please send any questions to theovertimetheater@gmail.com and we will respond as soon as possible.

Pirates vs Ninjas: THE MUSICAL

The Overtime Theater proudly presents Pirates vs Ninjas: The Musical, a hilarious musical by Scott McDowell with performances running from August 26 to September 17, 2022. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. with one Sunday matinee on September 11 at 3 p.m. at The Overtime Theater located at 5409 Bandera Road, Suite 205 on the city’s Northwest Side. In accordance with Covid-19 recommendations, there will be limited and distanced seating. Audience members are encouraged to wear face masks.

We have traveled to the land of San Texania where, for ages untold, the pirates and the ninjas have been at odds with one another.  The current generation looks like it will continue the tradition – until the Pirate Princess and Ninja Princess lock eyes across a crowded room and suddenly there is love!!  But will it be enough to overcome a lot of really, really deep dislike?  Even with all the dancing and singing?

“People have said that we’re ripping off West Side Story,” says director Rob Barron, “but that seems like a mean thing for them to say so we told them ‘Hey!  There’s no pirates in West Side Story!  So there!’  I actually always felt like Romeo and Juliet would have benefited from a couple of sea shanties, frankly.”

Ghosting

Dedicated to providing original, innovative, and accessible entertainment at an affordable price, the Overtime Theater is proud to present Ghosting. This along with The Reverend Dr. Paul(i) Murray and other productions at the Overtime in June are a part of our pride series.

After the death of his husband Todd, Jeffrey, a middle-aged man, hires Brandon, a struggling writer to finish his late husband’s plays in an effort to secure his theatrical legacy. In his ghostly form, an ever-optimistic Todd does his best to encourage the match until Brandon discovers an intimate diary detailing Todd and Jeffrey’s final days together. With the help of best friends Carol and Gavin and Todd’s otherworldly approval, the couple find their way back into each other’s hearts while also finishing Todd’s unfinished works.

Beneath the Surface

Written by Michael Song, Beneath the Surface is an anthology of three stories, each exploring themes of isolation, confinement, and one’s belief in the world around them. In the intimate setting of the Overtime, the peril of our protagonists is palpable, their fear almost permeating and infectious. From abductions to apocalyptic conjurings, our victims endeavor to explore their grisly circumstances; each in turn is being forced to explore deep within themselves if they have hope of survival. As each story unfolds, the audience is invited along on the journey to conjecture, deduce and ultimately discover what lies…beneath the surface.

Performances: March 26-April 16, 2022

And now he just found out his new roommate is the heroin-addicted Beat writer William S. Burroughs. What will he do next? Will it make sense? Will it involve getting help from some of the most famous figures of the 20th century? EINSTEIN’S WRONG ABOUT EVERYTHING may make you laugh, make you cry, make you reconsider every thought you’ve ever had since reaching the age of reason. Or not. We need your help

AdoFrom The Overtime Theater’s Executive Board to our supporters,

Thank you for everything you’ve ever done for us, from seeing our shows, talking with our actors, having your favorite writers and directors, to generously paying for tickets and donating to our Love Bucket. You are both what makes our work possible and why we work as hard as we do to bring you quality in return for your patronage.

Here is our honest truth: we depend on the profits of a month’s shows to pay for the next month’s shows, which means the lights stay on, we can paint the stage floor, we can print posters and programs, and everything else that goes into making a show happen. Not one of us makes money from what we do at the theater – no writer, no director, no actor, no one working front of house.

By closing the theater for two to three months, foregoing the income from shows, it will be a true hardship to re-open our doors.

The Overtime is the only theater in San Antonio dedicated to actually producing new work by local playwrights. This means that our work is not tried and true – and that it is unencumbered by prior productions and the expectations those engender; it is daring, risky, timely, modern, reflective of our times, culture, and lives. We give an opportunity to new voices and assist emerging theater artists by giving them a place to actually see their work produced, valued, and celebrated.

Unhappy Campers Cast

We do not do this work because we want to be wealthy or even profitable. We want to break even and you can help us do that. We have a goal to make $15,000 to keep doing what we do.

We understand that these are difficult times on every level, including financially, for everyone. If you could donate $5 or $10 it would make all the difference in us weathering this time and emerging – when we’re all able – funded and ready to continue being your community theater for new local works.

Thank you for your time reading this and your consideration.
