Captain Cortez: Echoes

The Adventures of Captain Cortez and the Tri-Lambda Brigade returns in December with new episodes!

Narrator: (deep Hollywood voice guy) Far in the future, like…really, really far, Earth exhausted its resources and travel to the stars was our only hope. Launching our race into the heavens we found a new galaxy to call home, New Eden. But like humanity does, we have brought our wars with us…we are now divided now into several feuding colonies. The race to the stars continue and we are on the verge of galactic war…and only one group stands in its way…Captain Cortez and the Tri-Lambda Brigade!!!

“Captain Cortez: Echoes”, the new serial continuing "The Adventures of Captain Cortez and the Tri-Lambda Brigade" at the Overtime Theater.

Brandi Stillwell (from left), Morgan Clyde, Michael Burger, Robert Jerdee and Allie Smith

And so began the adventures of Captain Cortes and the Tri-Lambda brigade at the Overtime. Across four exciting seasons and a full length show, audiences were thrilled as our heroes prevented galactic warfare between feuding colonies and the distruction of the universe by cunning and intelligent villains.

Starting New Year’s weekend, join us as we meet the newest captain Cortez (the name is the most important thing for the inspiring necessary fear) and the small band of the Tri-Lambdas who are continuing the mission to keep the universe safe.

There will be something for everyone. Faithful audiences will see all the characters again and new audiences will get to meet the residents of this star system for the first time – you don’t have to be a fan of the original series to follow the story or to fall in love with these quirky guardians and cheer as they foil the plans of evildoers across the galaxy.

Scott McDowell’s writing ranges from the slapstick comedy to tender death scenes and everything in between. A lover of science fiction and comic book heroes, he has created his own world and invites us along for the ride.

Grab your Skittles and come over to the Overtime Theater each Friday or Saturday from December 29 to January 20 at 8 PM to see four new episodes of captain Cortez!

Who is the show for? Lovers of science fiction, fantasy, fan fiction, comic books, and action movies.

The Bronson Pinchot Civil War Cupcake Experience

The Bronson Pinchot Civil War Cupcake Experience by William M. Razavi

The Overtime Theater presents “The Bronson Pinchot Civil War Cupcake Experience.”  Opening September 1st 2017, this new work by William M. Razavi (creater of 27 Short Plays About Being Murdered In A Hotel By Abba) is another entry into the world of comic mismatch and absurd normality. This time bringing together such obvious bedfellows as Perfect Strangers, Cupcakes, The Civil War, Bronson1aStrip Malls and a basement full of Crabs. Yeah, its going to be that kind of day…

Synopsis:

Mark, Linn and Baker had a relatively simple dream: a little cupcake shop in a strip mall that doubled as a Civil War museum and tripled as a shrine to the sitcom Perfect Strangers. When a local historical society and the landlord both employ the services of Bronson & Pinchot, LLC to shut down the cupcake shop things take a wild turn. But with her husband having left her for a Squirrel Sanctuary Supervisor and a basement full of crabs, Linn isn’t willing to let her dream die without a fight. After all, what would this country have been like if Abraham Lincoln hadn’t fought to make this a better place to make cupcakes?

“An immersive theatre experience that will make you feel like you’re really experiencing the American Civil War, a cupcake bakery, and the life of Bronson Pinchot. Edu-tainment at its best.”

The Last Days of Oscar Wilde

Written by Bernard J. Taylor

Directed by Derek Berlin

FROM DORIAN GRAY TO OSCAR WILDE

Derek Berlin directs the “Last Days of Oscar Wilde” which looks at the final years, while exiled in Paris, of the man whom many regard as the patron saint of the LGBT community and the role model for many gay men.

Having fallen from the heights of success – with his highly acclaimed stage comedies such as The Importance of Being Earnest and books such as The Picture of Dorian Gray – Wilde was forced to seek refuge in Paris after being convicted in London of homosexual activities and receiving a sentence of two years hard labor at Reading Jail. This ruined his health and left him with only a few years to live before he died at the age of 46.

Directed by Derek Berlin, whose one-man presentation of an adaptation of Dorian Gray won eight awards for excellence at last year’s ATAC awards. surfaces questions about  some of the popular conceptions of Wilde, including the image of him as a primarily gay philanderer.

The play examines the relationship between Wilde and his wife as well as his relationship with Lord Alfred Douglas, who was largely responsible for Wilde’s downfall. The work also examines his friendship with Canadian-born Robbie Ross, who proved to be Wilde’s most loyal friend and supporter.

Wilde is shown to be a sensualist who lived for beauty and pleasure, but who had an abiding love for his wife, Constance, and was shattered when she cut off all ties with him and he was no longer able to see the two sons he adored.

The work portrays his relationship with Lord Alfred Douglas as less of a sexual love affair and more as a romantic friendship between two seekers of pleasure, with Wilde taking an almost paternal interest in Douglas and feeling deeply hurt and betrayed when Douglas turned his back on him after bringing about his ruin.

Seven-Card Stud

Written by Greg Barrios, Directed by Richard Anthony

7-CardPromo

L to R: Brian Zavala, Aaron Ramos, and Rick E. Frederick.

Seven-Card Stud by Gregg Barrios, the latest of his plays centered around the life of Tennessee Williams, gives the audience a glimpse into the life of a true gay icon.

The play’s title comes from the final line in Streetcar: “The name of the game is seven-card stud.” It also marked the end of Williams and Rodriguez’s relationship. Seven-Card Stud picks up 20 years later in New Orleans. Williams at the nadir of his career is unable to get a play on Broadway. His creative life had dissipated. Pancho however has carved a successful life as the head of men’s furnishings at the prestigious Maison Blanche.

“Even in New Orleans, the story was virtually forgotten,” playwright Barrios said. “It is actually a true South Texas story. The Rodriguez family has strong ties to San Antonio and Eagle Pass. There are so many stories from our historical past rarely find their way to the stage. I hope that more plays and playwrights will consider documenting and recovering these forgotten events and those unsung persons so that our history as a people can continue to inspire future generations.”

About the Playwright

Gregg Barrios who is a San Antonio icon. Journalist, activist, teacher, poet, critic, filmmaker and playwright. He is a treasure of American arts and letters, a captivating performer, a consummate educator and artistic provocateur, and a powerful role model for others.

He is a 2013 USC Annenberg Getty Fellow, and serves on the board of directors of the National Book Critics Circle. He was inducted into the Texas Institute of Letters this year. He is the 2015 Fall Visiting Writer at Our Lady of the Lake University. His work has appeared in Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, Texas Observer, Texas Monthly, Film Quarterly, San Francisco Chronicle, and Andy Warhol’s Interview. He is a former book editor of the San Antonio Express-News. He has received a CTG-Mark Taper Fellowship, a Ford Foundation Grant, and a 2013 Artist Foundation Grant for his theater work.   He is collaborating with actor and filmmaker James Franco on a book of his experimental work in poetry and film.

The theater will have tables set up to play Seven-Card Stud (chips will be given with donations to the theater). The game is for fun/no pot offered in an effort to raise money for our upcoming move in April. Check the website for more information.
